What Is Total Hip Replacement?

Total hip replacement is a surgical procedure to remove the damaged cartilage and bones from the hip and replace them with special prosthetic implants. This procedure is usually performed to relieve pain from arthritis or repair severely damaged joints.

Who Should Undergo the Procedure?

  • Hip pain or stiffness experienced is so severe that it impedes your daily movements
  • Symptoms of hip injury do not respond well to non-surgical treatment options
  • You develop severe chronic arthritis in the hip joint

How to Prepare for Total Hip Replacement?

Prior to total hip replacement surgery, your hip specialist will conduct several diagnostic tests. These tests may include:

  • Physical examination
  • X-rays or MRI scans
  • Blood and urine tests
  • Electrocardiogram (check for heart activity)

What to Expect During Surgery?

Your surgeon will first make an incision over the front or side of your hips before removing the damaged cartilage and bones. Next, prosthetic implants (made of metal, plastic or ceramic) will be positioned into your pelvic bone to replace the damaged bones. This is done to restore hip stability and function.

The incision will then be stitched and bandaged.

What Are the Risks?

  • Difficulty urinating
  • Blood clots in the leg veins or pelvis
  • Dislocations, when the ball of the implant comes out of the hip socket
  • Hip stiffness which may inhibit movement

What Happens After Surgery?

After the surgery, you will be transferred to the recovery room to monitor your blood pressure, breathing and pulse levels. You may be required to be hospitalised for a few days.

Generally, it may take up to 6 to 12 weeks to resume some level of function and mobility, while full recovery may take about 6 to 12 months.
