Total hip replacement surgery is usually performed to relieve pain from arthritis or repair severely damaged joints. Your surgeon will replace a hip with an artificial prosthesis to restore its mobility and function.
Book AppointmentTotal hip replacement is a surgical procedure to remove the damaged cartilage and bones from the hip and replace them with special prosthetic implants. This procedure is usually performed to relieve pain from arthritis or repair severely damaged joints.
Prior to total hip replacement surgery, your hip specialist will conduct several diagnostic tests. These tests may include:
Your surgeon will first make an incision over the front or side of your hips before removing the damaged cartilage and bones. Next, prosthetic implants (made of metal, plastic or ceramic) will be positioned into your pelvic bone to replace the damaged bones. This is done to restore hip stability and function.
The incision will then be stitched and bandaged.
After the surgery, you will be transferred to the recovery room to monitor your blood pressure, breathing and pulse levels. You may be required to be hospitalised for a few days.
Generally, it may take up to 6 to 12 weeks to resume some level of function and mobility, while full recovery may take about 6 to 12 months.
